The Lake Tahoe engagements
As most info in books and on the net is about Elvis’ shows in Vegas or on tour, I’d like to take a look at Elvis shows in Lake Tahoe. I’ll start with the first Tahoe season. If there is enought interest I will look into the other Tahoe engagements later.
There are not many (quality) photo’s of Elvis performing in Lake Tahoe. Camera’s were not allowed during the shows (as in Vegas btw). The Tahoe hotel staff was very strict on this matter! So if you have good quality photo’s from the tahoe shows… do not hesitate to post them. Of course in these first posts they have to be from this engagement.
Most of the info I got from these fine books:
Live At Dell Webb’s Sahara Tahoe (Sue McCasland & Joseph A. Krein) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/3000248161_c.html
The Concert Years (Stein Erik Skar) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/8299427800_c.html
All Shook Up, Elvis Day-By-Day (Lee Cotten) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/1560750464_c.html
Elvis Day By Day (Peter Guralnick & Ernst Jorgensen) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/0345420896_c.html
The Elvis Files volume 6, 7 & 8 (Erik Lorentzen) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/8299855055_c.html https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/8269022306_c.html https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/8269022314_c.html
Elvis A. Presley (Marc Hendrickx) https://www.elvisbooks.nl/crd/0001850000_c.html
And the website: https://www.elvisconcerts.com/
So, let’s begin…
The Sahara Tahoe Hotel & Casino is located in South Lake Tahoe on highway 50 near Stateline, Nevada and was opened on june 30. 1965. It became The High Sierra Hotel & Casino on December 26. 1983 and then became The Horizon Hotel & Casino on October 1, 1990 . It closed it’s doors in early 2014.
Lake Tahoe engagement 1, 20th July – 2nd August 1971.
On july 5, 1971 Elvis travels to Los Angeles to start rehearsels for his first two-week engagement in Del Webb’s Sahara Tahoe Hotel at Lake Tahoe, Stateline Nevada. Colonel Parker negotiated a payment of $300,000. After expenses, Elvis’ earnings are about $142.000.
Elvis leaves his home in Holmby Hills, Bel Air on july 14, to travel to Lake Tahoe. The eight hour trip was made, together with his entourage, in a ‘convoy’ led by Elvis in his Mercedes Benz. Following their arrival, further rehearsels took place in the showroom of the hotel.
The big Mercedes...
Elvis was going to perform two shows each night, a dinner show and a midnight show. A ticked would cost $15.00 minimum, which was the highest ticketprice (double!) any performer charged thus far for a show at the Sahara Tahoe. The profits of sold souvenirs (on this and the coming Tahoe engagements) went to charity: The Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
The fist show takes place on july 20th. By that date, the whole engagement is a complete sellout already. The demand for tickets had been enormous. This made the hotel staff expand the number of seats in the showroom from 1200 to 1700. Earlier that year in Vegas, near the end of the february 19th midnight show, Elvis introduces ‘Also Sprach Zarathusta’ (by Ricard Strauss) tot he audience. On this Tahoe opening show it is used as opening theme for the show. Not fort he last time, as we all know. Sammy Davis jr.: “Elvis is not only the best, he also invented the best! When the music started I thought the whole Roman army would enter the stage!”. Joe Guercio conducted the Al Tronti orchestra during this engagement.
The tracklist on opening night (not confirmed) was probably like this: 2001 Theme / Thats All Right / Proud Mary / Jailhouse Rock / Love Me Tender / You Dont Have To Say You Love Me / Youve Lost That Loving Feeling / Polk Salad Annie / Johnny B Goode / Love Me / Heartbreak Hotel / Teddy Bear - Dont Be Cruel / One Night / Hound Dog / Suspicious Minds / Band Introductions / The Impossible Dream / Lawdy Miss Clawdy / Sweet Caroline / Bridge Over Troubled Water / Cant Help Falling In Love / Closing Vamp
Elvis seemed to be more motivated than he had been in Vegas lately. Surely the change of hotel and showroom contributed to that fact. Bilboard’s Claude Hill wrote: “Elvis left behind him a sold out auditorium which was almost as exhausted emotionally, if not physically, as he was. He works so hard that you’d think he needed the money…”

Re: The Lake Tahoe engagements
This is the first engagement where Elvis threw scarves (and even some teddy bears) in the audience. Now still limited to 4 or 5 scarves per show… but that would change the coming years! Some fans at the august 1 midnight show were very lucky… Elvis gave away one or more 4-LP sets during the show (the 50 WWGAH vol. 2 set, in a bag with the cover printed on it). One lucky fan was Mary Fletcher from California. She recalled the moment: “Well, to my amazement, Elvis walked over and bent down in front of me and handed the album TO ME and kissed ME! I will never forget that day for the rest of my life. I felt so special and my idol gave it to me”.

On Monday, august 2nd, Elvis closes the Tahoe engagement (with Priscilla in the audience). For this closing show the number of seat was even expanded again… this time with another 300 seats.
The tracklist fort he closing show: 2001 Theme / Thats All Right / Jailhouse Rock / Proud Mary / Love Me Tender / All Shook Up / Teddy Bear - Dont Be Cruel / You Dont Have To Say You Love Me / Youve Lost That Loving Feeling / Polk Salad Annie / Love Me / Blue Suede Shoes - Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On / Rip It Up / One Night / Hound Dog / Heartbreak Hotel / Suspicious Minds / Band Introductions / Im Leavin / The Impossible Dream / I Cant Stop Loving You / Bridge Over Troubled Water / I Was The One / Lawdy Miss Clawdy / Cant Help Falling In Love / Closing Vamp
Elvis is supposed to have performed some rarities during this engagement. Among them being Treat Me Nice (complete?), If I can Dream (excerpt) and I John (several times)
A day later, august 3rd, Elvis heads for Las Vegas again to rehearse for the next month-long Vegas engagement, starting a week later. The International Hotel was now named Hilton Hotel.

Re: The Lake Tahoe engagements
Excellent posts @Bilbobaggins. Nice research and read these with tremendous joy. Keep them coming! Too bad that there are not so many quality photographs from the engagements at Tahoe. Most of them floating around and used here are somewhat blurry. Ah well, we have to deal with that.

Elvis is wearing the white Bi-Centennial Suit with blue sleeves, so it must be from the April/May 1976 engagement.Bilbobaggins wrote: January 9th, 2026, 4:24 amDo you happen to know which engagement or show this photo is from?NinaFromCanadaEh wrote: January 9th, 2026, 12:49 am 30741618_1207711979365633_2966432270946140160_n.jpg

Here are two other pictures that I've got from this place and time :
You've never walked in that man's shoes or seen things through his eyes
Or stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies
So help your brother along the road no matter where you start
For the God that made you, made them too

At first I thought the same about those photo's. But several sources stated them as being from Tahoe. Especially the first book I mentioned, by Sue McCasland, comes over as a reliable source. But the arguments you bring up sound valid too. So nice to investigate this a little furter!gilles-tcb wrote: January 9th, 2026, 11:55 amThank you for this topic. Re: The Lake Tahoe engagements
And now, moving on to Tahoe 1973…
After closing another tour in Denver on april 30 1973, Elvis travelled to Stateline, Nevada. There he was accompanied by Linda Thompson.
On May 4 Elvis opened his 2nd engagement in the Sahara Tahoe Hotel. The hotel made a big mistake by overbooking the showroom. Fans with advance reservations were not admitted to the show, which almost led to riots. A bad omen maybe, because it was going to be a troubled engagement. There will be health issues, cancellations, and some negative reviews. Variety reports that Elvis is some 30 pounds overweight, puffy and white-faced. They state his voice is weak and his delivery is “flabby”.
The Al Tronti Orchestra replaced the Joe Guercio Orchestra again, as during the previous Tahoe engagement. Glen Campbell and Raquel Welch attended opening night. Vernon and Dee Presley were spotted ringside.
Another reviewer states:
The King still reigns
It's opening night of an Elvis engagement in the High Sierra Theatre of the Sahara Tahoe and the place is jammed to the rafters. Outside, the casino is plastered with Elvis posters. A line of anxious reservation holders snakes through the hotel. Some might be disappointed. The Sahara Tahoe has overbooked the engagement. Many won't get seats. The object of all this adoration, a legend in his own time, is a blackhaired, white-suited gentleman, not precisely a teenager, and beginning to show a pronounced middleaged spread. The ladies don't seem to mind.
A local review reported, "It's a mob scene, the place is jammed to the rafters. A line of anxious reservation holders snakes through the casino floor. The Sahara has overbooked this engagement and many fans won't get a seat." The review concluded, "He may be an older King, but a 15 year string of aspiring kings from Fabian to Neil Diamond have failed to unseat him. Obviously, he still reigns."

Still... photo's of Tahoe shows are hard to find. The ones found are often of bad quality and sometimes mislabelled. So... if you have additional photo's or spot foto's placed incorrect in my posts... do let me know!

Teressa Sevcik, from Washington recalls:
"My best friend, since birth. Kathy Thompson, (who died of cancer at 34) stood outside of the Sahara Tahoe Hotel in 1973 for hours waiting to buy tickets to the Elvis Presley dinner show. After several hours of waiting in line, she got to the front of the line, but the tickets were sold out.
I was working in the San Francisco East Bay Area as a hairdresser and I called the Sahara everyday, every few minutes in between haircuts, shampoo, set and perms for three weeks. I finally got a hold of a woman who worked at the front desk. I told her how grateful and shocked I was that I got a hold of her. I told her how we both had tried to get Elvis tickets. I begged for tickets, wouldn't you? That was the closest he had ever been to me in my adult life. The front desk lady told me that only hotel guest tickets were left. I offered to pay for a room just to get a ticket, however, I told her I preferred to stay with my girlfriends and probably wouldn't stay in the room, but I would pay for it, anyway. This soft hearted woman told me to come to the front desk the day of the concert and she would give me a room key and I would only have to pay $20. to see the concert. We got the key and the tickets. We walked up to the front of the line and we were the second couple in line. WOW!
The non hotel guest line was curved around the lobby and all the way outside.
We were seated right up front, one seat from the stage! Elvis tried to hand me a scarf FOUR times, but a woman who was sitting next to me by the stage, and had a huge cast on her leg, took them all. One of Elvis' backup singers motioned for me to go on the other side of the table to get a scarf, but I was too shy to move. It was an incredibly magical evening for me!"

Re: The Lake Tahoe engagements
Literally one of the worst bootlegs in existence... by THE worst bootleg label. It isn't referred to as Sh*t Records (SR) for nothing...Bilbobaggins wrote: January 9th, 2026, 6:45 am From this first Tahoe engagement, only three shows have been released, be it on imports as audience recordings.
These are the releases on CD:
From Tahoe To Vegas
July 24 1971, Midnight show (12.00am)
Released in 2011 on the SR Records label (longbox format, combined with Vegas recordings)
