I’m sure I saw something on a documentary years ago, something about this song being discussed and maybe played during the trial of the Menendez brothers. I flipped the station on while this was featured but never got any context. What did this song have to do with the brothers or their murdered parents? In the video at the time, it seemed like a light hearted moment in this dark trial.

Anyone else remember anything about this?

I don't know of any connection between the Menendez brothers' trial and the song or Elvis's recording of "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello." What I do know is that a friend of mine once spoke to RCA executive Joan Deary and she was very upset that their father was murdered. Their father too was an RCA executive having signed several artists to the label while Deary was there. Jose Menendez signed Menudo, Duran Duran, the Eurythmics, Starship, Mr. Mister, and Jose Feliciano.

I also know that during the court proceedings from the original trial of the Menendez brothers, it was disclosed that after their parents' murders, they went on a wild spending spree in which they attended courtside seats at New York Knicks (NBA) basketball games at Madison Square Garden. Several years ago, there was a guy who looked into this small detail and tried to find photographic or other evidence of the brothers attending the game. Initially he looked into still photography that appeared in magazines, newspapers, etc. with no luck. Eventually he stumbled across the 1990 Mark Jackson Hoops basketball card where you see the Menendez brothers seated in the background of the card. I have several of these cards as I collected basketball cards around that time. For a brief period, even eBay banned the sale of the card due to their involvement in the murders. The value of the card skyrocketed for a period, even though Mark Jackson was a good player but not a great player. Even today, you'll still see outrageous prices for the card on eBay and other places, with some listings even referencing the Menendez brothers being in the photo.

As far as I remember, Lyle and Erik Menendez’s confessions were recorded by their therapist, Dr. L. Jerome Oziel.

At the time, Oziel’s mistress, Judalon Smyth, secretly recorded their conversations and later testified against him. Her tapes revealed not only the brothers’ admissions but also her unusual and intimate relationship with Oziel.

In one call, Oziel tried to impress Smyth by singing “Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello” in an Elvis-style voice. That recording was later played in court.

Thank you for the context. I’d seen that tape being played on a show like Nightline or 48 Hours. Didn’t know what it had to do with the brothers.
