Elvis Presley made his only commercial when he sang a jingle for Southern Maid Doughnuts on the Louisiana Hayride radio program. Elvis sang “You can get ’em piping hot after four p.m., you can get ’em piping hot. Southern Maid Doughnuts hit the spot, you can get ’em piping hot after four p.m.”

Nina notes: I dread a recording of this being found with Elvis' food habits mocked as a result

The latest single, ‘I Forgot to Remember to Forget’/’Mystery Train’, appears on three of Billboard’s national charts, representing country music sales, jukebox, and radio play.

1956
The Nat ‘King’ Cole Show debuted on NBC-TV, becoming the first US musical variety show hosted by an African-American. After failing to secure national sponsorship, Cole decided to end the show in December, 1957, saying, “Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark.”

Home movies by a tourist:

1960
33 year old Johnny Horton, who had a number one hit with “Battle of New Orleans”, was killed when his Cadillac was hit by a drunken truck driver in Milano, Texas. Johnny had just played his last show at the Skyline in Austin, where Hank Williams had played his last show as well. Horton’s widow, Billy Joe, was also Hanks Williams’ widow. Horton reportedly hadn’t wanted to play that show, it was a small venue and he’d become a national star. After the show, he went to one of his favorite fishing places and it was returning home, his worst nightmare came true: and the drunk driver who killed Horton received only minor injuries.

Elvis Presley’s single “It’s Now Or Never” hit #1 in the U.K.

1963
The Beatles gave two shows at the Adelphi Cinema in Slough, England.

The filming on location of Kissin’ Cousins was completed. Elvis and the whole cast and crew returned to Los Angeles.
Elvis drove the Movie Truck, which lost it’s brakes – he might have died, and that this sorta Iconic one as being his potentially last movie is horrifying to consider – Viva Las Vegas was next and the 1968 special on the horizon.

1964

1966
Elvis Presley’s single “All That I Am” hit #18 in the U.K.

Elvis in Arizona for Stay Away, Joe

There was an oddity in the career of Elvis Presley: he had recorded an album, Stay Away Joe, that only one copy was pressed of and was to be played only one time, on an Arizona radio station, on November 5, 1967:

1968

1971
Elvis performed at the Metropolitan Sports Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The opening act by a comic was now given to Jackie Kahane – a 50s Borcht Belt type comedian.

The Imperials were no longer on this tour with Elvis. Maybe because of their schedules, maybe because of the Colonel, who was unwilling to pay more, but the Imperials soon learnt they were permanently replaced by the Stamps and J.D.Sumner. Also: comedian Jackie Kahane replaced Bob Melvin

Announcer Al Dvorin utters what would become a well known phrase: “Elvis has left the building” at the end of a Minneapolis concert by the King. He was asked to make the announcement in an effort to quiet the fans who continued to call for an encore. in August 2004, Dvorin was killed in an automobile accident following a concert by an Elvis impersonator.
