This is a thread for discussing the Elvis vinyl releases that were mastered by Boppin' Bob Jones from the UK. He was a UK-based mastering engineer that mastered many fine UK pressings of Elvis lp's (and some singles) especially in the turn of the 70's and 80's. I think we've come to some kind of consenseus here and in the previous forum that his work was brilliant and he really knew what he was doing.

To start it of,here is a list of all known pressings of Elvis lp's that have been mastered by BBJ. Almost all of them are UK pressings. Please note that some of these - especially the green label INTS - have been also mastered by other engineers. The only full proof method to know whether a vinyl was cut by BBJ is to have it in your hands so you can check whether his signature exists in the deadwax.

* = on some copies, the catalogue number starting with "SF..." on the back sleeve has been covered by a white sticker with a catalogue number starting with "INTS...". However, the black or blue label still has the original SF catalog number.

Below is a description of one of those records,written at a time I first created this topic.

American Trilogy (3 lp box set, Imperial Records, 1981)

I don't think I've ever seen this BBJ-mastered set live, and the first impression I got after opening the parcel was that this is really stylish set! I was expecting a cheapo release of some kind,but it is really done with taste. The cover is cool and with black color,the box is sturdy and each lp has a dedicated protection sleeve with some nice images and clearly stated song lists. The labels have image of Elvis,which looks cool. I never thought about it before but the fact that there are 3 lp's could be a double meaning for the title "American Trilogy"

Second nice suprise came when I put the lp's on the turntable and played them while getting into the track list. I think the song selection is really coherent,not entirely chronological but almost. Just quality songs, no fillers. One could argue about Long Legged Girl and Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby being fillers but somehow they succeed to defend their place in the midst of that great 60's material chosen for the set. And that's the girdt time I've ever defended the latter song to anyone The songs flow onwards very well,someone has really thought about what songs would work together.

Third really nice aspect was - which I admittedly knew to expect - that the sounds quality is really top notch to my ears. I haven't done any A-B analysis against other lp's or anything,but I've listened almost the whole set now and I keep on smiling at the clarity of the sound, defined bass lines and really pleasant higher frequencies. Of course be the fact that today is Friday or it might help that the records are almost unplayed and do not have any additional pops or snaps... but still. The sound is excellent.

I got this set for 20 eur including postage and to me it is really a steal of the decade. Talk about value for money! Amazingly,you can find these sets in Discogs and elsewhere for cheap price.. definitely the fourth positive aspect about this set.

This was released on the Imperial records label but clearly it was done under RCA somehow. The cover says "Compiled and Produced in association with RCA".

True BBJ quality,and warmly recommended if you don't happen to have this yet.

It is a fantastic sounding set. Side one of record 3 is amazing.

The box and artwork is nice, there is some thought in them.
The music is ofcourse excellent, the choices somewhat suprising but very welcome.
Soundwise BJ did a masterful job on the mastering part.
And even it stated that record three goes up until 1974, the "My way" version is the 1977 In Concert version in a sound you wish the whole (In concert) album should sound like.

While Bob Jones had an amazing ability to make copy of copy tapes sound detailed and punchy, I wonder if the compilation tape (or some of it) used for this set was sourced from the USA as some of these tracks sound like first generation copies?

Well spotted,guys! While listening to the set yesterday, I found myself wondering what version of My Way it was. Chronologically thinkin that should have been the 1973 aloha version but this version was superior. So also I came to a conclusion that it was the In Concert version. Proper mastering brought that track alive for sure. And it IS a better version than aloha one: the singer is really an older guy,looking back and singing about his past life. Aloha version is sung by a man still in his prime and therefore is not that beliavable.

I will continue this series of confirmed BBJ pressings by adding two UK titles that were probably pressed before the green label International series was started. At least the No.2 is also available with 100% identical sleeve but with an orange label...but be aware that the orange labels were not mastered by BBJ.

These pressings below have Bobbin' Bob Jones on the deadwax,are both mono, and they sound just great. In the old forum I compared these mono pressings to US mono pressings from the 50's as well as later stereo effect pressing and these BBJ pressings sounded way better. Who would have thought?

I must say, I never bought the first one, Rock 'n Roll. I always assumed it was only pressed in electronic stereo. I will be on the lookout for that mono pressing at the next record fair I visit next month.

Loving You and King Creole cut by Bob Jones also say "electronically re-processed" but are mono. They sound so good that I sold their excellent sounding FRIDAY MUSIC counterparts.

I am wondering/ hoping that thIS 1981 UK pressing has been cut by Bob JONES??

I've got rid of a few of mine, but I do have this one. Acuff Rose presents Elvis. It has a label on the front of the cover which says "Acuff-Rose presents Elvis Limited Edition, Presented to Roger Scott", who was a British DJ.

Thank you @John for these images. That is really a nice and quite rare lp,I've never seen that in real life. It it especially cool that you own a copy presented to Roger Scott,a nice story behind that as well then.

So the common factor for the songs included in that lp was that they were all published by Acoff-Rose. That might explain the inclusion of Your Cheatin' Heart and Miracle of the Rosary on the same side

I haven't played it yet. It's on the list to do. I'll let you know when I do it.

I'll also take some better photos. I only took these quickly for someone else.

had an Elvis vinyl all day session yesterday with the London Flash from this board and FECC.

We compared my three Indianapolis dynaflex pressings of Love Letters (orange label flimsy and think one plus the tan version) and the german black label RCA International against the Boppin' Bob Green Label RCA International. In our opinion the Boppin Bob sounded noticeably better so Ive bought this one off eBay today:

Sounds great ,I wish I had been there as well. That's exactly the way the sound should be analyzed. 4 ears hear better than 2!

I have two green label pressings and one of them is by BBJ. i too need to make an A-B comparison with some other pressings. I have an Tan label version too so I might compare against that like you guys did.

yes the green label versions are BBJ - they sound fantastic as you say
