1926
Born on this day, Chuck Berry singer, songwriter and guitarist. Berry was one of the pioneers of rock and roll music, who helped developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive; his lyrics focusing on teen life and consumerism plus his own brand of showmanship became a major influence on subsequent rock music. He also had surprise hit in 1972 with the UK and US No.1 single ‘My Ding A Ling’. A major influence on The Beatles and Rolling Stones, Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’ was one of the examples of music from Earth sent out to space. Berry died on 18 March 2017 aged 90.
1947
On his twenty-first birthday, Chuck Berry leaves jail after serving three years for armed robbery. He would go on to hang bumpers on cars in an automotive factory, a janitor in an apartment building, and then as a beautician before recording “Maybellene” for Chess Records in 1955.

1956
Elvis pulled into the station at Gayoso and Second for repairs and was besieged by fans. Hopper, the station manager, ordered Presley away and a brief altercation ensued. Station employee Aubrey Brown tries to help his boss, but is no match for Presley. After police are called, Hopper and Brown are charged with assault and are eventually fined $25 and $15 respectively.
Afterwards, Elvis spent the day with girlfriend Barbara Hearn and SweetPea, a dog he had gotten for Gladys.

1957
Paul McCartney made his first appearance with The Quarry Men at New Clubmoor Hall, Norris Green, Liverpool. The line-up for The Quarry Men was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Eric Griffiths, Colin Hanton, and Len Garry. Paul played John some songs that he had composed which Lennon contributes, marking the birth of the Lennon and McCartney songwriting partnership. . McCartney, who played lead guitar, didn’t perform well in his solo, which eventually led to George Harrison being invited into the group and Paul switching to bass.
Peggy Sue Gerron first heard the song that was named for her when she went to see Buddy Holly & the Crickets in concert in Sacramento, California. Gerron later married Crickets drummer Jerry Allison.
Scotty Moore and Bill Black played Texas State Fair, Dallas, TX (4 shows daily from October 5 to 20)
1958
The Elvis Presley single “King Creole” hit #2 in the U.S.

1959
In Kansas City, 75 teenagers were arrested outside Municipal Auditorium after a riot broke out, giving civic leaders ammunition to further decry “the rock ‘n’ roll menace.”
1962
It Happened at the World’s Fair Production: August 28 , September 4-13 in Seattle, to Nov 9
1963
Chuck Berry was released from federal prison in Springfield, Missouri after serving 19 months for transporting a minor across state lines for an immoral purpose.
1964
Taking a day off from their British tour The Beatles went into the studio and completed the recording of six album tracks and the A-side of their next single: ‘I Feel Fine’. They also completed ‘Eight Days a Week’, ‘Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey’, ‘Mr. Moonlight’, ‘I’ll Follow the Sun’, ‘Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby’. ‘Rock and Roll Music’ and ‘Words of Love.’

1969
An obviously ill Bill Haley played the First Annual Rock and Roll Revival show at New York’s Madison Square Garden. As he stepped onto the stage and before he played a note, Haley received an eight-minute standing ovation. Chuck Berry, the Platters, the Shirelles, the Coasters, Jimmy Clanton, and Sha Na Na also performed at the show.
1970
Elvis flew to Los Angeles.
1972
From October 8 to the end of the month, Elvis watched almost every night movies at the Memphian or the Crosstown.
1973
Elvis in Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital. Linda Thompson stayed in the room with him.
1976
Elvis performed at the Arena, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A clump of hair trimmed from Elvis Presley‘s head when he joined the US Army in March, 1958, sold for $15,000 at the Leslie Hindman auction house in Chicago. Also among the 200 Elvis-related items up for bid was one of Presley’s shirts which went for $52,000.
