The Gibson Mandolin guitar company was formed. Gibson’s first electric guitar the ES-150 was produced in 1936, and in 1946 Gibson introduced the P-90 single coil pickup, which was eventually used on the first Les Paul model made in 1952.

Elvis Presley‘s “Love Me Tender” entered the Billboard chart for a nineteen week stay. It was #1 for five of those weeks. The song, from Presley’s first film of the same name, was adapted from the tune “Aura Lee”, written in 1861.

Elvis flew to Memphis, where he would stay the whole week, before returning to Los Angeles. There was a private ceremony arranged for him, where he received his official deputy sheriff’s badge from the Sheriff. This badge permitted him to carry a pistol.

1972
From October 8 to the end of the month, Elvis watched almost every night movies at the Memphian or the Crosstown.
1979
A motion picture called The Rose, starring Bette Midler as a self-destructive 1960s Rock star, (transparently based on Janis Joplin) premieres in Los Angeles. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Frederic Forrest), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Bette Midler, in her screen debut), Best Film Editing and Best Sound. Also in the movie: David Keith as the groupie fish out of water character, who would later play Elvis in “Heartbreak Hotel”
1995
The Elvis Presley five-disc boxed long box set “Walk A Mile In My Shoes – The Essential 70’s Masters” was released.

1999
A charity auction selling Elvis Presley‘s belongings was held at The Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. His wristwatch sold for $32,500, a cigar box for $25,000, an autographed baseball sold for $19,000 and his 1956 Lincoln Continental went for $250,000.

They also included notable sides such as ‘Got A Lot Of Livin’ To Do’ and ‘Rock-A-Hula Baby.’
