September 27, 1957
Elvis drove to Tupelo with Anita Wood and his parents and some friends. In the local paper Elvis was called “the best ambassador any town could have” and urged all townspeople to give him a warm welcome.
Elvis performed at the Fairgrounds, Tupelo, for the benefit of the planned Elvis Presley Youth Center. There was a crowd of 12,000 people and Elvis wore his Gold Lame Jacket.
With Bill Black and Scotty Moore having recently departed, Elvis was accompanied by Hank Garland on guitar, D.J. Fontana on drums and Chuck Wiggington, a friend of D.J., on bass.
Set list:
Heartbreak Hotel
I Got A Woman
When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again
Mean Woman Blues
Shake Rattle And Roll
Hound Dog
While Elvis raised $10,000 in 1957 dollars, Tupelo never built the youth centre.
($10,000 in 1957 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $115,293.95 today, an increase of $105,293.95 over 68 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.66% per year between 1957 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 1,052.94%.)
September 27, 1974
An obviously drugged Elvis accidentally falls to his knees while leaving the limo for tonight’s show at the University of Maryland, then gives a decidedly lackluster performance. The media as well as the fans were puzzled about Elvis performance throughout this tour.
