The CW 8-Part Docuseries ‘TV We Love’ Premieres Next Month, Starting With ‘I Love Lucy’ Episode (EXCLUSIVE)
By Michael Schneider
The CW is firing up the old cathode-ray tubes and taking a nostalgic trip back to the heyday of broadcast TV via the new multi-part docuseries “TV We Love.” The show, which bows Monday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. ET, will focus on eight iconic series: “I Love Lucy,” “The Brady Bunch,” “The Love Boat,” “The Honeymooners,” “Happy Days,” “Dynasty,” “Cheers” and “Touched by An Angel.”
The shows all come from the deep CBS Media Ventures library, which is why producer Bright North Studios has partnered with CBS Studios on the project. Paramount Global Content Distribution is handling the global distribution.
“We can’t wait to bring ‘TV We Love’ to The CW and take viewers on a nostalgic trip back to the era of must-see television,” said The CW head of content Heather Olander. “The show celebrates the iconic television series that are some of the biggest hits of all time and gives a peek behind the scenes as cast members and insiders share the stories that make them so unforgettable.”
Bright North Studios is backed by RedBird IMI, which is led by former NBCUniversal and CNN boss Jeff Zucker — who also appears throughout the docuseries as an expert on the TV biz.
“It’s always fun to relive our our youth and our great memories of growing up, with some of the most iconic shows in television history,” Zucker said. “Personally, I knew that whether we were at NBC or CNN, whenever we looked at the history of television, audiences loved it. So I thought it was a natural for Bright North Studios to to do this latest version. As far as me, I love television and I love old shows. It was a treat for me to be able to relive some of my great childhood memories on some of the most iconic shows in television history.”
Zucker noted a personal affinity for “The Honeymooners”: “I’ve seen every episode many, many times, and watch it every time it comes on,” he said. “I had a great summer, because ‘The Honeymooners’ was on MeTV all summer. I just smile and laugh every time those four characters are on TV. So, ‘The Honeymooners’ is my favorite show of all time, and Jackie Gleason and Art Carney learning how to play golf with the greatest line — ‘address the ball!’ — was my favorite scene of all time.”
The series will begin with an episode devoted to “I Love Lucy.” Every episode will include cast members, creators, scholars and television insiders, detailing some of the moments and insights behind why those shows remain iconic to this day.
Among the talking heads on the docuseries: Keith Thibodeaux (“I Love Lucy”); Barry Williams and Christopher Knight (“The Brady Bunch”); Fred Grandy and Ted Lange (“The Love Boat”); Don Most and Scott Baio (“Happy Days”); Al Corley, Jack Coleman and Pamela Sue Martin (“Dynasty”) and Roma Downey (“Touched By An Angel”). The special also features Variety executive editor, TV, Michael Schneider, journalist Jim Colucci and celebrities Bob Costas, Carrie Preston, Gary Cole, Nicole Sullivan and Kate Flannery.
Megan Harding, Shawn Efran, Morgan Hertzan, Azadeh de Leon and Michael Bass are executive producers on “TV We Love.”
