The Beatles appear at the Royal Command Performances at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. In attendance are the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden. It was here that John Lennon made his now famous announcement: “For our last number, I’d like to ask for your help. The people in the cheaper seats clap your hands and the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewellery, we’d like to sing a song called Twist and Shout.” John would later say “I was fantastically nervous, but I wanted to rebel a bit and that was the best I could do.”

Even though he was the one who was the most opposed to touring in the final years of The Beatles, George Harrison became the first to set out on a solo tour when he appeared in Vancouver, Canada with Billy Preston. It will be a troublesome show for him as his voice is ravaged after LP sessions and tour rehearsals. The concert and the rest of the tour played in front of thin crowds.

The Beatles were famous for double-sided hits and Paul McCartney continued the practice with his group Wings as they released “Junior’s Farm”

They played three songs together: ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ and ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night.’ Backstage after the concert, Lennon got back with Yoko Ono after a temporary split.

His girl friend, May Pang, would later recall that John got the inspiration for the song when he saw TV evangelist Reverend Ike utter the phrase “Let me tell you guys, it doesn’t matter, it’s whatever gets you through the night.”

The newest members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced. Those who will join the distinguished list of previous inductees are George Harrison, Prince, ZZ Top, Jackson Browne, The Dells, Bob Seger and Traffic. George Harrison will become the third Beatle to enter the Rock Hall as a solo performer; John Lennon was inducted in 1992 and Paul McCartney in 1999. The group was inducted in 1988.

An acoustic guitar on which the late Beatle George Harrison learned to play fetched £276,000 at a London auction. His father originally bought the Egmond guitar for Harrison for £3.50. 1963
The Beatles released their second album, “With The Beatles”, in the UK. The collection featured “All My Loving”, “Please Mr. Postman” and “Roll Over Beethoven” and would succeed their first L.P. in the #1 spot, giving the Fab Four a string of 51 consecutive weeks at the top of the UK album chart. The LP had advance orders of a half million and sold another half million by September 1965, making it the second album to sell a million copies in the UK, (after the soundtrack to the 1958 film South Pacific). Capitol Records in Canada issued the album as “Beatlemania! With the Beatles,” which has the distinction of being the first Beatles album ever released in North America. Most of the songs from the album were not released in the U.S. until January 1964 when Capitol issued “Meet the Beatles!”

1966
The Supremes became the first female group to have a No.1 album on the US char with ‘The Supremes a Go Go’, knocking The Beatles Revolver from the top of the charts.

1967
George Harrison of the Beatles began recording the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall.

1968

The Beatles release a double album simply called “The Beatles”, but known to fans as “The White Album”. Among the 29 songs on the L.P. is Ringo Starr’s first song writing contribution, “Don’t Pass Me By”, which as a single, made it to number one in Scandinavia. The Album had ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, ‘Dear Prudence’, ‘Helter Skelter’, ‘Blackbird’ ‘Back In The USSR’ and George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. Priced at £3.13 shillings, ($8.76), it spent eight weeks as the UK No.1 album.

1969
Paul McCartney publicly denied rumors that he was dead. The most recent of many “clues” of this Death Hoax was the fact that he was the only barefoot Beatle on the newly released Abbey Road LP cover. The story was actually started as a prank by Fred La Bour, a sports and arts writer for the student paper, The Michigan Daily at the University of Michigan.

The Beatles had the #1 album Abbey Road but Led Zeppelin made a 15 to 2 move with Led Zeppelin II.

1996

It was announced that, “The Beatles were now bigger than The Beatles”. The statement was based on sales so far this year, having sold 6,000,000 albums from their back catalogue and a combined total of 13,000,000 copies of ‘The Beatles Anthology 1’ and ‘The Beatles Anthology 2’. With the release of ‘The Beatles Anthology 3’ a week away, it was anticipated that total Beatles album sales for 1996 would exceed 20 million. A poll showed 41 percent of sales were to teenagers who were not born when The Beatles officially called it quits in 1970.

2018
The Beatles’ self-titled LP, known to fans as “the white album”, returned to the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 chart following its 50th anniversary reissue on November 9th. The album was ranked at #6 after selling 63,000 units.

The Beatles travelled to St. James’ Church Hall, London, for a ten-minute audition with BBC Television. The audition came about when Beatles fan, David Smith of Preston, Lancashire wrote to the BBC asking for The Beatles to be featured on BBC television. Assuming that Smith was The Beatles’ manager, the BBC wrote back to him, offering The Beatles an audition. Smith brought his letter to NEMS Enterprises, and Clive Epstein (Brian’s brother) arranged for audition to take place. Four days later, Brian Epstein received a polite “thumbs-down” letter from the BBC.

1965

Steppenwolf’s rocker “Magic Carpet Ride” came in fourth and Dion moved from 9 to 5 with “Abraham, Martin And John”. The rest of the Top 10: “White Room” from Cream, Johnny Nash slipped slightly with “Hold Me Tight”, Johnnie Taylor wondered “Who’s Making Love”, O.C. Several other Beatles records figured in the top 20. Low-numbered copies of The Beatles The White Album was said to be worth £7,000 ($11,222 USD), though a copy of a mono White Album #0000005 sold for £19,201 ($30,782 USD) in 2009.

2014

1966
The Beatles got together for the first time since their return from the summer tour of the United States, ready to record a new album. The first song selected for recording was John Lennon’s ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, which would not end up on the album, but as The Beatles’ next single. This day’s session was devoted entirely to ‘Strawberry Fields Forever.’

1968

Diana Ross and The Supremes were at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Love Child’, their 11th No.1 in the US. The song is also notable for knocking off and keeping The Beatles massive ‘Hey Jude’ off the top spot in the US.

1973
Ringo Starr went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Photograph’. His first of two US chart toppers as a solo artist. Written by Starr and George Harrison, the promotional film shot for the single showed Starr walking around his new house at the time, Tittenhurst Park, which had been previously the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, (and where the ‘Imagine’ promo film was shot).

Ringo Starr surprised all by reaching #1 with “Photograph”. Eddie Kendricks was derailed with “Keep On Truckin'” and the Carpenters had another monster hit at #3 with “Top Of The World”. Billy Preston advanced with “Space Race”. The rest of the Top 10: The DeFranco Family with “Heartbeat – It’s A Lovebeat”, Gladys Knight & the Pips had #6 with their great song “Midnight Train To Georgia”, Chicago’s “Just You ‘N’ Me”, Marie Osmond with “Paper Roses”, Elton John moved from 15-9 with “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes found the Top 10 with “The Love I Lost”.

Elton John had what to date was the biggest album of his career as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road remained at #1 for a third week. Quadrophenia by the Who peaked at 2 while Ringo by Ringo Starr moved from 15 to 3. Goats Head Soup spilled down to #4 for the Rolling Stones with Jim Croce’s posthumous release You Don’t Mess Around with Jim right behind. The rest of the Top 10: Jonathan Livingston Seagull from Neil Diamond, moving 14-6, Brothers and Sisters taking a turn down for the Allman Brothers Band, Life and Times by Jim Croce #8, The Joker by the Steve Miller Band and Los Cochinos from Cheech & Chong at #10.

1974
The bone fragments of a 3.2 million-year-old hominid were discovered by scientists in Ethiopia; the skeletal remains were nicknamed “Lucy.” for the Beatles Song.

John Lennon rehearsed with Elton John for EJ’s upcoming concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

2011

A New York memorabilia store announced that it would auction a “to do” list written by John Lennon which included waiting for the HBO cable guy, fixing the hook on the bathroom door, making sure there was enough marmalade in the house, and purchasing Margaret Trudeau’s book Beyond Reason. The hand-written, one page list was expected to fetch over $3,000

1965

Harrods department store in London, England closed their doors to the public so The Beatles could do their Christmas shopping.

1968

The Beatles (known as The White Album), was released in the US. Notable for the eclectic nature of its songs, the album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and was listed at No.10 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. The album features: ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’, ‘Dear Prudence’, ‘Helter Skelter’, ‘Blackbird’ ‘Back In The USSR’ and George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. The album spent 101 weeks on the US chart peaking at No.1.

1969

John Lennon returned the MBE award (Member of the British Empire) that he and the other Beatles had been given in 1965. He sent the medal back with a note that read, “Your Majesty, I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With love, John Lennon of Bag”.

In late October, 2016, a draft of that letter surfaced after being found in the sleeve of a used record that was purchased for ten Pounds. It was speculated that because the handwriting on the letter became smudged, Lennon sent a more pristine copy to the Queen. A memorabilia expert appraised its value at $72,000.

2000

The Beatles‘ album simply titled “1”, a collection of their UK and US chart toppers, reaches number one in Great Britain. It will top the US chart a week later and will become the best selling album in a total of 28 countries worldwide.

Under the direction of producer George Martin, who told the band that their original ballad version was “too bloody boring for words,” the song is re-arranged to an up-tempo rocker The Beatles recorded their second single ‘Please Please Me’ in 18 takes and ‘Ask Me Why’ for the flip side at EMI studio’s London. When released in the US on the Vee-Jay label, the first pressings featured a typographical error: The band’s name was spelled “The Beattles”. The Beatles recorded “Ask Me Why” for the flip side during a three-hour session at EMI Studios in London.

1966
