Contract #6: Paramount | 6 January 1961

Wallis agreed to rewrite the 28 october 1958 Presley contract. It became a five-picture deal with Elvis getting $175,000 for each of the first three films and $200,000 a piece for the last two. The five movies completed under this contract were Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), Fun in Acapulco (1963), Roustabout (1964), and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966). Later, a bonus of $90,000, to be split evenly between Elvis and the Colonel, was added for the last film.

It comes from various sources through the years like auctions/E-bay etc; if interesting I download it for my collection and/or for sharing on Elvis-sites.

Now is the hour (Maori farewell song *)
The song is written by Maewa Kaihan – Clement Scott – Dorothy Stewart.

The song is often mentioned in magazines – books as instrumental track recorded on 27 july 1965 for the movie PHS. There are no documents about this recording and the song is probably rejected in the pre-selection.
The song was a big hit in 1948 with recordings by:
08-11-47 – Bing Crosby (Decca 24279);
00-11-47 – Eddy Howard (Majestic 1191);
00-11-47 – Grace Fields (London 110);
22-11-47 – Charlie Spivak (RCA 20-2704);
00-03-48 – Margaret Whiting (Capitol 15024).

* The Maori’s originate from New Zealand!!

The original version (?) was recorded with the title “Po Atarau” in february 1927 by Ana Hato & Deane Waretini (Parlophone A 2806 – Australia). The first two verses are in Maori and the song continues with English lyrics “Now is the hour”.

Princess papooli’s papaya
Queenie wahine's papaya is based on the song Princess poo pooly has plenty papaya written by Harry Owens (Decca 2931). The song was not used.
A new song with the same title was written by Giant-Baum-Kaye and selected for scene 28 (23-06-65) but replaced later on with re-written lyrics by Queenie wahine's papaya.

Princess papooli papaya
SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE
BUT I KNOW A GAL WHO SELLS SO MUCH MORE
PRINCESS PAPOOLI’S PAPAYA RATES HIGHER
THEN PINE APPLE PUMPKIN OR POI
PLEASE PICK HER PAPPAYA
PUT PRINCESS PAPOOLI IN PERFECT PERPETUAL JOY
THO SOME PEOPLE’S PALATES PREFER PICKLE SALADS
PLUMPUDDING PINK POP CORN PEACH PIE
PRINCESS PAPOOLI YOU’LL TRULY DESIRE
WHEN THAT POPULAR PRINCESS PASSES BY

lyrics 23 june 1965
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Queenie wahine’s papaya
SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE
BUT I KNOW A GAL WHO SELLS SO MUCH MORE
QUEENIE WAHINE’S PAPAYA RATES HIGHER

Mine (Tepper-Bennett)
After a few rejections during earlier recording sessions the song was submitted now for the movie Paradise Hawaiian style. It was a replacement for Now is the hour (scene 280). It has the same musical arrangement.
However the song was replaced for that scene by This is my heaven. The song was recorded later on 11 september 1967 in a non-movie recording session.
