Interesting that neither Ernst or Roger Semon could make it this year. I wonder what they were doing that prevented the trip or maybe it was just not important enough for them.

I always find the Q & A sessions interesting, but not for the right reasons. Once again, this session was void of members from the audience being able to ask any question.

Norman "Mazzy" Maslov gives his take on the album. It starts at the 58 second mark & ends at the 14 minute & 58 second mark:

Sadly this set with all the hype is not that great!
Bootleggers have provided a better mix in the past of the 1970 rehearsals I found the mix
of the 1970 rehearsals underwhelming I probably will not listen to this version again
Sony is supposed to be professional
This set appears to put together by amateurs who have not bothered to listen back to what
they are producing if they had they would not have issued a product like they have
It does not encourage Elvis fans of the future
I well remember in 1976 purchasing A Legendary Performer VOL 1 and the quality of the product
and LP sound was brilliant as was the sound on my Blue Vinyl edition of Moody Blue in 1977 in
those days RCA cared about producing the best product they could
When you see the quality of historical releases of The Beatles it puts the Elvis product to shame
Elvis fans deserve to receive quality product for their money as well

Elvis does not sell anywhere near the kind of numbers that The Beatles do, which means that Sony has a restricted budget. As an example, From Elvis in Nashville from 2021 as of 6 months ago has global sales which includes streaming and downloads of around 37.5k. The re-issued Let It Be album from 2022 sold nearly double that in Japan alone, and in one year.

From memory, that same album sold the equivalent of 18k units in the first week of release totalling 29k in the UK for the first few weeks. Sunset Boulevard sold 2,600 units in its first week. That’s why you don’t see the kind of treatment from Sony for Elvis that Apple/Universal give to The Beatles releases.

Sony has produced some excellent big box sets for Elvis over the years. However, I believe that the one for the ‘68 TV Special did not sell as well as Sony had hoped, which spelt the end of those big expensive 12" boxes with Sony moving to the smaller 8" boxes.

"FanFrom'61" is 100% accurate here!! It`s all about budget, and the Elvis releases sadly don`t come close to the Beatles releases as far as sales. It`s been that way for years now. Sony knows where to draw the line and the investment can only be so high based on previous sales. When it`s all said and done it has to be profitable. Sony are releasing these things during the month of August in order to catch more sales during the anniversary Elvis week. We may see something special for 2027. Other people make the claim that Sony should do this or that or I could come up with a better release than Sony does, but either way people still have to buy the product and in the U.S market that`s declining more and more with each passing year. Even in the UK the various chart placings for Sunset Boulevard are misleading, because the actual sales are low compared to years ago. It`s a sad fact that any company would have a hard time getting big sales for an Elvis product now or in the future, almost 50 years later that`s actually quite understandable.

IMHO, they should have included more outtakes from both March 1972 and March 1975. There's more outtakes of "Green, Green Grass of Home," "Always on My Mind," "And I Love You So," "For the Good Times," "Where Do I Go from Here," "Bringin' It Back," "Pieces of My Life," "Susan When She Tried," and "Shake a Hand."

They also could have included the "Billy Swan my ass..." comment by Elvis.

They also could have included the masters that had some string and brass overdubs removed from the March 1972 sessions. Examples would include "Always on My Mind," "Fool," "It's a Matter of Time," and "Separate Ways."

They could have included the September 1973 Palm Springs recordings stripped down masters. I realize the set is called Sunset Boulevard and that the other recordings on the set were done at RCA Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard but since this is the last they are going to do the stripped down masters like they started with American Sound 1969 and followed with From Elvis in Nashville, Back in Nashville and last year's Memphis set covering 1969, 1973 and 1976.

Really they should have included all of the masters from 1969 and 1973 on last year's Memphis set.

Whilst a nice idea, you have to remember that this is a mainstream release and the only way they can attract people outside of the fanbase is to keep the number of CDs to a minimum which in turn makes the price favourable. And that applies to last year’s Memphis set. As fans, yes we would always like them to have included more of this and that, but Joe Public are not going to buy into such a release as readily as fans would, and even fans are not buying into these releases in a particularly big way.

Also, including songs recorded at Palm Springs would completely detract from what the release was about whilst the previous releases you mention were relevant to certain specific recording locations. Where do you draw the line once you start going into other territories that in this case would have no relevance to recordings done at RCA Studios on Sunset Boulevard.

I’m sure that FTD will do a session set release for everything that was done at Sunset to include outtakes that were not included in the Sony release, after all, they don’t seem to have much of a problem in recent years doing some duplication between Sony and FTD releases, so it could include the original album, the original rough mix versions plus all the outtakes and they might use such a release to do a mop up exercise to include the Palm Springs recordings.

'What's the matter daddy", " I beat my little children so', " daddy get off your *** again". Hilarious. And the barking on Memories? Priceless.

When I had got the FTD, I snipped the high pitched ' whats the matter daddy.. Daddy please don't cry. Don't cry.'and programmed it as a ringtone on my dad's phone. He was so annoyed.
