Citing the recent success of white pop cover versions of R&B hits, Billboard magazine reported that “music with an R&B beat is no longer regarded as a passing phase by major recording firms.”
The Penguins had the first new #1 R&B song of the Rock Era–“Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”.
LaVern Baker charted with “Tweedle Dee” (#14), her first of twenty pop Top 100 45s between 1955 and 1966. She also had twenty-one R&B hits and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Elvis performed at the Louisiana Hayride, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport. Elvis wore a rust-colored suit, black-dotted purple tie, and pink socks and performed Hearts Of Stone, That’s All Right and Tweedle Dee.

Colonel Parker and Tom Diskin arrived in Shreveport and this was almost certainly the first time either of them saw Elvis perform. The Colonel took steps to forge a link with Bob Neal after the show.

Elvis performed at the Municipal Auditorium San Antonio, Texas at 3.00 and 8.00 p.m. On this 6 day Hank Snow tour, Elvis was billed as “RCA Victor’s newest singing sensation” but this was the last time he was booked as a supporting act. He received $1,800 for the entire tour.

While Elvis was in San Antonio he visited D.J. Fontana’s aunt and uncle in their restaurant. There for he missed a cocktail party held in his honor with Bob Neal and the Colonel. Later he was reminded by them of his professional obligations.
1957
Elvis went to the studio where soundtrack recording for his new picture began, at 10.00 a.m. ending at 5.00 p.m. Like Elvis had promised, The Jordanaires, Scotty, Bill and DJ were all hired. The 2 musicians who were regulars in the Paramount studio, Hilmer “Tiny” Timbrell on guitar and Dudley Brooks on piano, were playing along and became regulars on Elvis’ Hollywood sessions in the sixties.

Elvis Presley Telegram to Young Fan (1957)
Here we have a 1957 Telegram from Elvis Presley to a young Fan. The young fan was Kristen Peterson, daughter of actor Arthur Peterson, a veteran actor of radio and film, perhaps best known as ‘The Major’ on the quirky, cult-classic TV series ‘Soap’.

Elvis worked on the soundtrack at Radio Recorders from 9.00 a.m. to 5.40 p.m. Leiber and Stoller, who had written several songs for the picture, were in charge with the usual Hollywood band. The bassist Ray Siegel was present too as well as a 4 man horn section to create a Dixieland Rock feeling.

The Supremes signed a world wide recording contract with Motown Records. Originally founded as the Primettes, they became the most commercially successful of Motown’s acts and are, to date, America’s most successful vocal group with 12 No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

Elvis arranged for the funeral of his uncle Pat Biggs, the husband of Vernon’s sister Delta. He invited the widow to live with her mother Minnie, at Graceland, where she would remain until her death on June 29, 1993. Pat Biggs, a gambler and nightclub owner, had always encouraged Elvis to believe in himself and had been a favorite of his nephew.

1968
Elvis flew to Nashville to record 2 new tracks for Stay Away Joe, as well as some additional material for RCA. He was accompanied by all the Nashville regulars, along with Jerry Reed once again on guitar. The session ran until 5.00 a.m. The first song was a real good version of Too Much Monkey Business, but the next movie song Elvis had to do, drained all the energy out of the session.
Elvis fought himself through 30 takes of Goin’ Home. Later he went home himself in his rented Lincoln to the Jack Spencer Motor Hotel.

Elvis returned to Memphis with Priscilla and arrived at 11.30 p.m.
and then Elvis spent several hours in the study next to his bedroom where he worked on his speech for the JCC awards dinner.

Elvis was picked up at 7.45 p.m. at his Monovale home and driven to the RCA studio on Sunset to rehearse for his upcoming Vegas opening. He returned home at 1.45 a.m. and this schedule was maintained the next 3 nights.
Among the new songs Elvis rehearsed were some of the recordings from his recent Stax session, as well as The Twelfth Of Never, Born To Lose and I’m Leavin’ It Up To You. However in the end only Let Me Be There, Why Me Lord and Help Me were introduced in the show.

Meyer Lansky, the organized crime figure known as the “Mob’s Accountant,” who helped create Las Vegas, died of lung cancer at age 80.

On TV’s Entertainment Tonight Brenda Lee, the dimunitive dynamite damsel, suggested that the all-male line-up of inductees into that night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should include the likes of the Shirelles, Mary Wells, Dionne Warwick, and herself. “The women who pioneered rock ‘n’ roll. . . .were just as important as the males,” she stated.
The Rock and Roll Hall of fame inducted Bobby “Blue” Bland, Jimi Hendrix, Sam & Dave, Elmore James, and Booker T & the MG.’s for the seventh Annual awards ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York. Little Richard inducted the Isley Brothers and brought down the house when he sang “Shout” with them at the post-awards party. Also inducted was pioneer New Orleans Bluesman, Professor Longhair, whom presenter Aaron Neville called “The Grandfather of rock ‘n’ roll. Where did rock ‘n’ roll come from? It’s the baby of R&B.”
1994
American singer songwriter Harry Nilsson died in his sleep of heart failure after spending the previous day in the recording studio. He recorded ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ from the film Midnight Cowboy and wrote hits for Three Dog Night and The Monkees. Had the UK & US No.1 single with his version of the Badfinger Evans & Ham song ‘Without You.’ When John Lennon and Paul McCartney held a press conference in 1968 to announce the formation of Apple Corps, John was asked to name his favorite American artist. He replied, “Nilsson”. Paul was then asked to name his favorite American group. He replied, “Nilsson”. His wife would later say that the last thing he ever said to her was “I love you so much.”
Elvis Presley had turned down the role that Voight played in Midnight Cowboy, and probably then would have recorded the song, he also performed many Three Dog Night songs in concert.

Much has been written about Elvis Presley, but his ex-wife Priscilla has said there are some facts she keeps for herself from their private life. Nevertheless, during the King’s 85th birthday celebrations at Graceland last week, the 74-year-old shared a story she says was previously not public. Speaking at a Q&A, Priscilla spoke of an ultimatum telegraph from Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker.
Priscilla, who had been dating Elvis aged just 14 during his military service in Europe, said: “I have a telegram that he gave me, I’ve never shared this before really.
“A telegram, when he left [Germany], [detailed] what he was up against with Colonel Parker if he was dating anyone.
“[It] warned Elvis that if he has a girlfriend that fans will not be there for him, basically – I’m paraphrasing this.
“And he showed it to me and said, ‘This is what I’m up against.’”
Priscilla continued: “He couldn’t really have a girlfriend because [for] fans…he’d be taken.
“One day if I ever get to write a book I’m going to put that telegram in there.
“I didn’t quite know what that meant. I guess it meant we would be breaking up.
“ ‘Are we supposed to be breaking up? Are we together, are we not together?’”

Priscilla continued: “He couldn’t really have a girlfriend because [for] fans…he’d be taken.

During the interview, Priscilla also “set the record straight” on claims her father forced Elvis to marry her.
The 74-year-old affirmed: “I’m going to set the record straight. It was never that my father wanted me to go to Graceland ever. I had begged my mother to talk to my dad.
“It was Elvis’ suggestion that I come and see him in the summer of ’62.
“It was his suggestion that I get my dad…talk to my mother…about me coming.”
She continued: “I never ever said, ‘Can I come, can you let me come?’, I was never that girl, I was very reserved.
“He’s the one who told me he wanted to see me.
“And my dad had to talk to him. I was going to stay with Vernon [Presley, Elvis’ father.]
“It was not that easy, but the stories out there that I wanted to come to Graceland…it was never that way round.”
Priscilla explained: “It was Elvis making the phone calls…I didn’t know when he was going to call. It could be three months, it could be a couple of months, it could be maybe four months.
"Again, he was also busy too. And back in the day, the telephone calls went through an operator, so it would take a few hours before we got the call. [My father] wanted to know his intentions. I mean, he didn’t want me hurt.”
“And Elvis said he cared very much about me…and that he had plans for me. There’s all these stories out there that my dad forced him to marry me.
“I mean it makes me sick when I read that, because that’s not true.”
