12th of Never
12th of Never
Is there any evidence that shows Elvis performed The 12th of Never at least once in concert ?
Re: 12th of Never
Guess it did not happen.
All the shows for the Summer festival of 1974 (where this song was rehearsed for) are known to collectors, being on cd or cdr... no trace of "Twelfth of never"...

Wasn't the Twelfth Of Never one of the rumoured 6 songs Elvis asked Charlie to find the lyrics and chord changes for the tour that never happened in August 1977?

Yes, but its unlikely that the August 1977 tour would have been any different to the previous ones. Therefore, any new additions to the set list would have been unrehearsed, and had the song been spontaneously attempted, the odds on Elvis turning in a complete performance couldn't have been good...katele18 wrote: January 11th, 2026, 7:04 am Wasn't the Twelfth Of Never one of the rumoured 6 songs Elvis asked Charlie to find the lyrics and chord changes for the tour that never happened in August 1977?

Re: 12th of Never
I love the song. What a treasure it was when we were first treated to it 31 years ago on the Walk A Mile In My Shoes set. I must confess I was not familiar with the Johnny Mathis version of the song or anyone else's back then, making it a total aural discovery for me.
I know this is saying a lot but to me, it is one of the best love songs he sang and we don't have a proper recording of it!
In recent months I came across this speed-corrected version. I don't have any technical reasoning to support my position, but my ears tell me it sounds better and like a closer approximation to how Elvis probably sounded when he sang it on August 16, 1974. Do you all not think this sounds superior to what we just got on the Sunset Boulevard set?
It does still have the tape hiss, which doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to clean up in this day and age. Shame on me but I had been hopeful going into the SB release that we might see some serious sonic improvements made on these rehearsals. The proper studio recordings were treated so masterfully and of course that is where they should have focused their efforts. I guess I'm just greedy like that.
I'm sure many of you know this version with overdubs by David Briggs from the DAE import From Sunset Boulevard to Paradise Road, released the year after WAMIMS. The instrumentation is beautiful and does an ok job of covering up the shortcomings overall, but it seems to make Elvis's vocal stand out even more as being from a subpar recording. And of course the speed is not corrected as in the above version.
Someday, I guess someone -- maybe somebody from this forum -- will put all these types of possible enhancements together and do Elvis and this superbly written piece of music justice.

...which, you know, that's the way it is but we don't have to emphasize it.
