My very first was "Aloha from Hawaii".
Don't know anymore what came after it, but it never stopped... ;)

My first LP was Girls girls girls (mono) pressed in Germany; followed by LPM 1382 - Elvis from Germany and followed by LP Fun in Acapulco (mono - Germany). At the time I had not a stereo player but a portable stand alone pick up.
Then collection seriously started.

I still remember clearly walking with my father to the Studio Fox record store in my birth town Zwolle (Netherlands) where he bought this record. It must have been in 1978: I was a 6 year old kid back.
Elvis Love Songs.jpg
That album lit the fire. The first albums I actually owned myself were a Camden and a Green Label INTS, both presents.

The first record I bought of my pocket money was in the early 80s (I must have had a small collection of about ten albums on LP and music cassette at that time). It was the Green Label INTS It Happened At The Worlds Fair. I remember I had to go to the bank to get some money off my savings account to have enough cash in hand to make the purchase and the cashier being a pain in the ass asking for what I needed the money
while my parents had signed the bank's consent form.

Today my Elvis collection consists of over 2.000 media, including over 1.200 LPs.

You go back a long time Colonel. Do you still have your collection in tact or did you sell most of it over the years? Just curious.

This was my very first one. I played it to death and still have it. Rather unplayable by now

My second one... in glorious Electronically Created Stereo!

The third one. A masterpiece, also in ECS.

I played these on a recordplayer quite similar to this one...

One of my first LP memories is getting Promised Land as xmas present as a teen in the early 80`s.
I even have a photo with me holding the album a few hours after I got it.

I was in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968. In 1966, I decided to start buying 2 Elvis LPs each payday (every 2 weeks). I started with the most recent. I believe that the first 2 were Harum Scaum and Spinout. I worked my way back from there. My wife's first LP was LPM 1382, Elvis Presley. Purchased with an 8 year old's allowance in 1956. She continued to buy every Elvis LP, EP and 45. When we were married in 1970, our collections were merged together with her originals and my re-issues.

I got into Elvis when I was 8 or 9, but I was born 2 weeks before Lisa Marie

I used the inner sleeve adverts to track down every Elvis LP and have a mix of Canada, USA and a few European LPS

My first LP was the re-issue of Golden Records Vol 2, unfortunately it was in re-processed stereo.

being a teen girl in the 1980s and collecting Elvis resulted in a lot of rude customer service encounters with older teen boys or early 20s men

Image

This set of 8 LPs came out in 1980. I had spent the summer babysitting and had earned just enough to buy it

The clerk sneered Cash or credit?

I put down 5 dollar bills until the 40 dollar price was covered

the clerk's face going paler with each bill, as I had put down in cash more than his weekly paycheque woulda been

I was 12

Image

I still have this set which I played a few times and I now also have it on cd

Image

this set gave an overview of Elvis' career and fandom

with interestingly an almost 20 minute Elvis monolog from 1962 recorded on a movie set.

The second album has the 1961 USS Arizona Benefit concert

movie tracks, the tv specials, Vegas, rare b sides
Elvis on Piano and touring concert

and a book of Elvis photos along with paperwork
Image
Anyway, while it’s an interesting career highlights package, it’s for noderate to hardcore Elvis fans and not more general music.

It collects enough rare events to make it worthwhile for the non-completist fans

and it shows a nice progression of how this material was handled

a nice reminder that sometime RCA did right by the fans and by Elvis

instead of all the hits/christmas compliations

seriously, he only had barely 2 albums of christmas songs and there’s been over 40 official releases.

Image

It’s funny how for a few items, the purchase experience is such a part of the collecting memory.

collectors: the modern hunter/gatherers?

I remember shocking an Elvis forum when I asked when are you done collecting?

when they keep finding new things, it’s hard to stop. Storage space is a factor.

Thank you for sharing this memory @NinaFromCanadaEh . A 12 year old girl paying cash with eight 5 dollar bills, in 1980... great!

Your heartbeat must have been quite high when you arrived at home with this great box!

First album on cassette was Camden's "Elvis sings Flaming Star" - purchased in July 1979. :)

First-ever vinyl was the K-Tel compilation "Elvis Love Songs" - advertised on British TV in November 1979 and got to No.4 in the album charts. This is when I received my first record player. :)

A month later for Xmas I was presented with my first double LP, and also my first coloured vinyl, in the form of RCA's "Elvis 40 Greatest" (pink pressing!). :)

Reply to question by Alexander - see previous post(s):
I still have the LP collection I bought through the years. I don't collect compilations / non RCA albums promoted on TV etc.
Only a handful LP's I've sold or traded for other LP's.

To be honest I nearly don't play vinyl because with CD and / or CDR it's easier.

Yes, it was quite the thrill getting this, that none of the adult Elvis fans in my family had

it was so different from the studio and soundtrack LPs

and the book, was almost like time travel

The first LP I ever received was Candlelite Music's "The Legendary Magic of Elvis Presley" as a 5-year-old in 1982. Great little collection. Here's the TV advert that I saw for it.

For those who grew up in the NYC area, the advertisement is voiced by the late DJ Dan Daniel (Triple D) who made his bones as a DJ on WMCA in NYC. One of the smoothest voices out there, and by all accounts, one of the nicest radio personalities around.
