The J.P. Seeburg Corporation introduces its new Dual Music System Jukebox, the first ever equipped to hold a hundred singles and two song per side Extended Play discs.
Elvis began a weeklong tour with Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson and Porter Wagoner at Cherry Springs Dance Hall, Cherryspring, Texas.
1956
The Johnny Burnette Trio appear on Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour TV show. With Johnny on lead vocals and guitar, his brother Dorsey on stand-up bass and Paul Burlison on lead guitar, they won three weeks in a row, earning them a string of tour dates. It would take Johnny four more years to reach the US charts with “Dreamin” and “You’re Sixteen”.
Elvis paid his dentist $150 for plastic inserts for his upper anterior teeth.
1957
Jerry Lee Lewis‘ “Whole Lot Of Shakin’ Going On” peaks at #3 on the Billboard Top 100. The record would not only top the R&B and Country charts, but it would go on to be ranked #61 on Rolling Stone magazine’s Greatest Songs Of All Time and in 2005 be added to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress. That’s not bad for a song that Jerry Lee, along with drummer J.M. Van Eaton and guitarist Roland Janes, had recorded in just one take because Sun Records’ producer Jack Clement didn’t have enough tape left for any other attempts.

1959
On this date, Ken Brown decided to leave the Quarrymen, leaving John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison to fend for themselves. (Don’t worry about them; they were going to be fine…) The group had played at the popular Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool, England in a show that Brown was unable to perform due to a heavy cold. McCartney felt that Brown should not get a share of the performance fee since he did not perform. Lennon and Harrison sided with McCartney and so Brown quit the group.
1962
Britain’s BBC bans Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett‘s “Monster Mash”. Although the song is neither obscene or controversial, it’s about a horror movie party and like many other songs, is banned under a catch-all regulation prohibiting the broadcast of anything deemed “offensive.”

“Yesterday” topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Magazine Best Sellers chart. The song was actually recorded by Paul McCartney alone, who had earlier tried in vain to fit the other Beatles in, but would later admit he just couldn’t make the song work in any other form.

Sam And Dave‘s classic, “Soul Man” is released in the US, where it will rise to #4 by the end of November. The song would be given the 1968 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.
1970
Elvis bought a black 1971 Stutz Blackhawk from Jules Meyers Pontiac in Los Angeles and turned it over to George Barris for customizing. According to Barris, the car, first of its kind in Los Angeles, was meant to be for Frank Sinatra, but Elvis managed to talk Meyers into selling the car to him.

John Lennon’s “Imagine” LP is released. It would reach #1 on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named “Imagine” as #76 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
1972
From October 8 to the end of the month, Elvis watched almost every night movies at the Memphian or the Crosstown.
1973
Elvis and Priscilla Presley were divorced after six years of marriage. The divorce was finalized at the County Superior Courthouse in Santa Monica. After a short hearing, only 20 minutes, Elvis and Priscilla came out of the court walking hand in hand.

Quincy Jones accepted his first gold record. It was for the album “Body Heat.”
Elvis performed at the Expo Center, Abilene, Kansas. After this show Elvis flew to Lake Tahoe.
The 15th day tour left Elvis and the Colonel with $960,000 to divide.

Marking what would have been John Lennon’s 45th birthday, Yoko Ono formally dedicated a two and a half acre landscaped section in New York’s Central Park called Strawberry Fields.
1999
The estate of Elvis Presley donated items for a charity auction at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. A cigar box belonging to Presley sold for $25,000 a wristwatch brought in 25 grand, an autographed baseball fetched $19,000 and Elvis’s 1956 Lincoln Continental sold for $250,000.

9/11 fundraising efforts: What is surprising is that even Elvis Presley is weighing in. RCA Records have announced that they are to release an enhanced CD single featuring Presley singing America the Beautiful. All proceeds will go to disaster relief funds.

“Like everyone, RCA Records and our associates wanted to make a meaningful contribution,” said RCA vice-president Michael Omansky. “Elvis Presley is the most influential musical artist in history and we saw an immediate opportunity to marry that spirit of the past with the tragedy of the present.”

2002
John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman was denied parole for a second time on October 9th, the same day that Lennon would have turned 62. The state parole board issued a statement that said releasing Chapman after 22 years in prison would “deprecate the seriousness” of the crime and while Chapman had “acceptable” behavior in prison, that didn’t guarantee he wouldn’t pose a threat to society. At his first parole hearing two years earlier, Chapman said he did not deserve to go free. The 48 year old prisoner lived in a housing unit separate from the general population for his own safety and worked as a clerk.

Most of George Harrison’s solo music made its digital debut with the release of iTunes versions of his albums. Harrison’s catalog was the last of the four Beatles’ to go digital.
2008
Paul McCartney, (a vegetarian for 30 years), was said to be furious when he heard that a Liverpool branch of McDonald’s restaurant displayed his picture, accusing them of using it to attract customers. Sir Paul was quoted as saying “What sort of morons do McDonald’s think Beatles fans are?”
2011
69-year-old Paul McCartney announced an 11 date tour that would take him through Russia, Europe and the United Arab Emirates, set to begin the following month.
2013
Paul McCartney surprised 400 students at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts with a performance of a 13 song set consisting of tunes from his latest album along with Beatles and Wings classics. Macca delighted the assembly by telling them, “This beats going to class,” as he kicked off the show with “Eight Days A Week”.
2015
Figures released by the Recording Industry Association of America showed a 52.1 percent gain in vinyl record sales that accounted for more than $221 million in revenue. CDs, meanwhile, sold slightly more than 41 million units so far this year, a 27.6 percent drop from last year’s midpoint tally of 56.8 million. They generated nearly $495 million in revenue, which represents a drop of more than 30 percent below last year’s $722 million sales value.
