Demo acetate

Post by colonel snow »

Is it because your near

I came across this acetate; the song is written by Don Robertson & Hal Blair.
I don't know a link with a recording session and/or movie by Elvis.
Anyone has more information?

The demo acetate with “The girl I never loved” written by Randy Starr (publisher Gladys Music) was used in the movie Clambake.
Another demo acetate with the same title is published by Hill and Range.
Question: Is the song published by Hill and Range written by Randy Starr or another songwriter?

Moon burn
The song is written by Fred Wise-Ben Weisman-Dolores Fuller for the movie Blue Hawaii but rejected.
I’ve no information about the songspot in the movie and the song is not mentioned in the CD set / book “Making of Blue Hawaii”.

On the backside of the Electrovox acetate is the demo version of Playing with fire (Fred Wise-Ben Weisman). In the musical breakdown this song was selected for scene 167 but never recorded.

Both tracks were released in 2025 on CD’s “The bootleg series Elvis Presley - Rareties volume 1 & 2”
(Label Elvisone):
volume 1: Moon burn;
volume 2: Playing with fire.

An angel cried
The story goes that in 1958 Elvis met an upcoming singer Anita Bryant and gave her a pile with 5 demos:

1) An angel cried - written by Phil Spector;

2) A Texan and a girl from Mexico - written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman;

3) I don't want to - written by Janice Torr & Fred Spielmann;

4) Paper roses - written by Janice & Fred Spielmann;

5) Pictures - written by Sid Tepper & Roy Bennett.

She recorded 4 of the demos around 1960/61 and gave back the demo with I don't want to to Elvis.
Elvis recorded the song for the movie Girls girls girls.

1) An angel cried - released on Carlton 547 in 1960;
2) A Texan and a girl from Mexico - released on Carlton 538 in 1960
3) not recorded
4) Paper roses - released on Carlton 528 in 1960;
5) Pictures - released on LP in 1961.
